How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT names local businesses it can corroborate. When someone asks for the best plumber in a city, the model runs a web search and assembles an answer from pages it can read and trust: directory listings, review platforms, local publications, and the business's own site. You get recommended by being consistently described, in the same terms, in enough of those places.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT does not maintain a business directory you can submit to. It searches the live web and summarizes what it finds.
  • Consistency across sources matters more than any single page: the model needs corroboration before it names a business.
  • Your own website is the weakest single signal and the strongest foundation, because it is what every other source gets checked against.
  • Third-party mentions in local press, directories and review platforms carry disproportionate weight, because they are independent.
  • 45% of consumers now use generative AI tools when looking for a local business, according to BrightLocal's 2026 survey.
  • Nobody can guarantee a mention. What is measurable is whether your business appears across a fixed set of prompts, tracked over time.

What ChatGPT is actually doing when it answers

Ask ChatGPT for the best pediatric dentist in Charlotte and it does not consult a database of dentists. It runs a web search, reads the pages that come back, and writes a summary of what those pages agree on.

That single fact rearranges the whole problem. You are not optimizing for a ranking algorithm with a scoreboard. You are trying to make sure that when a model reads the web about your category and your city, your business is present, legible, and consistently described.

The four things that decide whether you get named

Your site says what you do, plainly. Models extract answers, they do not infer brand personality. A homepage that opens with “Excellence, delivered” gives an assistant nothing. One that opens with “We are a family dental practice in South End, Charlotte, treating children from age one” gives it a sentence it can lift verbatim.

Your details are identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours and categories should match exactly across your Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, industry directories and your own site. Conflicting information is the most common reason a model hedges and names someone else instead. It cannot verify you, so it moves on.

Independent sources talk about you. Reviews, local news, a mention in a “best of” roundup, a supplier’s partner page, a chamber of commerce listing. These matter more than your own copy for the same reason a reference matters more than a résumé.

Your pages are readable by machines. Static HTML, clean heading hierarchy, structured data marking up your business type, address and hours. Content that only appears after JavaScript executes is invisible to most AI crawlers.

What to do first

  1. Fix the answer up front. On every important page, put a direct, quotable answer in the first paragraph. Models overwhelmingly quote the opening of a page.
  2. Audit your listings for conflicts. Pull every listing you can find and compare them field by field. Fix the mismatches before you build anything new.
  3. Add structured data. LocalBusiness markup with address, hours, geo coordinates and services, plus FAQPage markup on pages that answer questions.
  4. Build the pages that answer real questions. The queries people type into an assistant are questions, not keywords. A page titled “How much does a root canal cost in Charlotte?” can be quoted; a page titled “Services” cannot.
  5. Earn mentions deliberately. Sponsor something local, get quoted in a regional publication, appear on a partner’s site. One credible third-party mention outperforms ten more pages of your own copy.
  6. Measure with a fixed prompt set. Write down 25 buying-intent prompts for your category and city. Run them monthly. Record whether you appear and who appears instead.

What nobody can promise you

Model outputs vary between users, sessions and versions. Two people asking the same question in the same city can get different lists. Anyone guaranteeing you a permanent spot in ChatGPT’s answer is describing something they cannot control.

What is honest, and what is worth paying for, is the underlying work, meaning legible pages, clean listings and real third-party evidence, plus measurement that shows whether the picture is moving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There is no advertising placement or paid inclusion inside ChatGPT's organic recommendations, and anyone selling guaranteed placement is selling something they do not control. What you can influence is the underlying evidence the model reads when it searches.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

Expect two to four months before the pattern shifts reliably. Assistants search live, so a single new page can be picked up within days, but a business only starts appearing consistently once several independent sources describe it the same way, and building those takes a quarter.

Does my website even matter if ChatGPT searches the web?

It matters more, not less. Your site is the reference document every other source gets checked against, and it is the only one you fully control. If it does not state plainly what you do, where you do it, and who you serve, the model has nothing authoritative to anchor on.
