Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

There are five likely causes: the profile is unverified, it has been suspended, it is being filtered as a duplicate, the searcher is too far away for your business to be shown, or your primary category does not match what they searched for. Checking them in that order identifies the problem in most cases within twenty minutes.

Key takeaways

  • Check status before ranking: an unverified, suspended or duplicated profile will not appear no matter what else you do.
  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and distance is not something you can optimize around.
  • Searching your own business name from your own office proves nothing, because your location and history skew results.
  • Primary category is the strongest lever you control, and it is frequently set wrong.
  • A service-area business with no visible address shows up differently, and often less, than a storefront.

First, stop testing it the wrong way

Searching your own business name, from your own office, while logged into the account that manages the profile, tells you almost nothing. Google personalizes heavily on location and history, so you are the least reliable observer of your own visibility.

Test in an incognito window from a different location, or use a grid-based rank tracker that samples results from dozens of points across your service area. The honest picture is usually more varied than either “we rank” or “we are invisible”.

The five causes, in checking order

1. The profile is not verified

An unverified profile can exist without being eligible to appear. Open the dashboard and confirm verification status before anything else.

2. The profile is suspended

Suspensions come in two forms. A soft suspension leaves the listing visible but unmanageable; a hard suspension removes it from Maps entirely. Common triggers are keywords added to the business name, an address that cannot be verified, a virtual office, and editing several core fields in one sitting.

If this is the cause, revert the violation first and appeal with documentation: a utility bill at the address, a business license, photographs of exterior signage.

3. A duplicate listing is competing with you

Duplicates split your signals and Google filters one of them out. Search for your business name, address and phone number separately; old listings created by staff, franchisors or data aggregators are common. Merge or remove them.

4. Proximity

Google’s own guidance names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is the one nobody wants to hear about, because it cannot be optimized. If a customer is searching from a neighborhood ten miles away and twenty comparable businesses sit between you and them, you will not be in the three-result pack, and no amount of profile work changes that.

This is why grid measurement matters: it shows the radius in which you actually compete, which is the honest basis for any plan.

5. Category mismatch

Whitespark’s 2026 survey of local SEO practitioners placed primary category at the top of the map pack ranking factors. It is also the field most often set carelessly. A med spa listed under “Beauty salon” is competing in the wrong race. Check what your best-performing competitors use as their primary category, and make sure yours matches the service you actually want calls for.

After status, the ranking work

Once the profile is verified, clean and correctly categorized, the levers are the ordinary ones: complete every field, choose accurate secondary categories, list services with real descriptions, add genuine photographs regularly, keep hours accurate including holidays, earn reviews steadily, and build a website with a dedicated page for each service so that localized organic results reinforce the profile.

None of that beats proximity. All of it decides who wins among the businesses close enough to be considered.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check properly whether I appear?

Search from outside your own account and outside your own building. Use an incognito window, and better still a grid-based rank tracking tool that samples results from many points across your service area, because the answer genuinely differs street by street.

My profile was fine and vanished overnight. What happened?

That pattern almost always means a suspension, usually triggered by an edit to a core field such as name, address or category, or by an automated review of your address. Check your dashboard for a suspension notice, and do not delete the profile. Deleting it destroys your reviews and does not resolve anything.

Can I rank in a city where I have no address?

In the map pack, generally not. Proximity to the searcher is a dominant factor and having no presence in that city is a hard limit. What you can rank for is localized organic results, using a dedicated page for that city and service, which is a slower but genuinely available route.
