Do citations still matter for local SEO?

Yes, but for a different reason than a decade ago. Building hundreds of directory listings no longer lifts rankings meaningfully. What still matters is consistency: contradictory business data across the web undermines trust in your listing and gives AI assistants a reason to recommend a competitor they can verify more easily.

Key takeaways

  • Citation volume is no longer a meaningful ranking lever. Quality and consistency replaced quantity years ago.
  • Inconsistent NAP data still causes measurable harm, which makes cleanup worth more than acquisition.
  • Roughly a dozen major aggregators and platforms carry nearly all the weight; the long tail of directories carries almost none.
  • Industry-specific and locally relevant listings outperform general directories, because they are also a source of referrals.
  • AI assistants verify businesses by cross-checking independent sources, which gives consistency a second, newer reason to matter.

What changed

For years, local SEO advice amounted to: submit your business to as many directories as possible. It worked because Google’s local index was thin and directory data helped confirm that a business existed.

That gap closed. Google now has abundant data about businesses, practitioner surveys place citation signals well below categories, reviews, content and links in map pack influence, and submitting to another two hundred directories does not move anything.

What did not change

Consistency. Contradictory data is still actively harmful, and this is the part people skip because cleanup is tedious and produces no impressive report.

A business that moved offices in 2023 and left the old address on eleven platforms is telling search engines two incompatible stories. So is one with a call-tracking number on some listings and a real one on others, or a name that appears as “Riverside Dental” in three places and “Riverside Dental Care of Tampa” in four more.

The newer reason it matters

AI assistants answering a question like “who is the best orthodontist in Tampa” cannot check a license or make a phone call. They corroborate: several independent sources describing the same business the same way. Contradictions break corroboration, and the model settles on whichever business is easier to verify.

This makes citation hygiene more consequential now than it was five years ago, even as its direct ranking value fell. The same work, for a different reason.

What to actually do

Audit before you build. Find every existing listing, including ones created by staff, franchisors or aggregators without your knowledge. Compare name, address, phone and hours field by field against your Google Business Profile.

Fix the important platforms first. The major data aggregators, Google, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, the large review platforms, and the two or three directories specific to your industry. This is a couple of dozen listings, not hundreds.

Kill duplicates. Two listings for one location split your signals and one usually gets filtered out. Merge or remove.

Add locally relevant listings deliberately. Chamber of commerce, professional associations, local business groups, supplier partner pages. These are worth more than general directories because they are real relationships that sometimes send actual customers.

Then stop. Once the important listings are accurate, additional volume is not a strategy. The time is better spent on content, reviews and earning mentions in places customers actually read.

Recheck twice a year. Listings drift as platforms update from stale sources, someone edits a profile, an aggregator pushes an old record. Half an hour every six months keeps the picture coherent.

Frequently asked questions

Should I pay for a citation-building service?

For an initial cleanup and submission to the main aggregators, a one-time paid service is reasonable and saves considerable time. Ongoing monthly citation building at scale is rarely worth it. Once the major platforms are correct, the remaining directories add little.

How many citations does a local business need?

Get the important ones right rather than counting. That usually means the major data aggregators, Google, Apple, Bing, the large review platforms, your industry's specific directories, and local ones such as the chamber of commerce. Thirty accurate listings beat three hundred inconsistent ones.

What counts as an inconsistency?

Any difference in business name, address or phone number, including abbreviations such as Ste. versus Suite, a tracking phone number on one platform, an old address left in place after a move, or a name with a keyword appended on one listing. Small differences are exactly the kind of thing an automated system cannot resolve.
